The Viceregal Lodge, now called Rashtrapati Niwas, is a stunning example of colonial architecture located on Observatory Hills in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. This grand building was designed by British architect Henry Irwin and constructed between 1880 and 1888 while Lord Dufferin was Viceroy of India. The lodge, which originally cost around 38 lakh rupees to build, once sat on a vast estate of 331 acres but now occupies 110 acres. Viceregal Lodge in Shimla is inspired by English Renaissance and Scottish Highland castles, featuring a light blue-grey stone exterior and detailed woodwork inside, including Burma teak specially imported for the project.
