Want to become a teacher in the United States? American Board offers an online, self-paced alternative teacher certification program designed for individuals who want to pursue a teaching career without following a traditional university-based route. Whether you are changing careers or turning your passion for education into a profession, the program provides study materials, structured study plans, practice quizzes, and exams to help you prepare for teacher certification.

Candidates can explore subject areas such as Biology, Chemistry, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Physics, History, Elementary Education, Reading, Science, and Special Education, depending on availability in their chosen state. The program is fully online, allowing candidates to study at their own pace and begin when they are ready. American Board’s Standard program includes essential preparation resources, while selected subjects also offer a Premium option with additional study support and job counseling resources.

The website lists a Standard program price of $1,900 and a Premium program price of $2,100, with installment plans and reduced enrollment options available for eligible candidates. Most candidates complete the program in approximately 5–8 months, although individual timelines vary. To get started, candidates generally need a bachelor’s degree, must submit official transcripts, and must meet the applicable background-check and state certification requirements.

Because teaching requirements, approved subjects, and eligibility differ by state, reviewing the relevant state guidelines is an important first step.
